Wall Street Wasn’t Drunk, the Government Was

You know, you’d figure that when someone realizes something doesn’t work, they’d stop doing it. For instance, when a college student realizes that too much studying or too little preparation for an exam is bad, he’d figure that he should moderately study instead. But he normally doesn’t. I believe it is human nature to look for err and perplex one’s self into oblivion whenever necessary.

The simpleton behavior of our federal government is like that of this student. It either decides to intrude upon liberties too much or simply panics and doesn’t know what to do when people are in need of their rights protected. Let’s review a few things that have happened in the past few years. Housing markets collapsed, banks lent bad loans, the auto industry fell, wall street decided to binge drink, FDIC needed to be bailed out, Amtrak was bailed out, and now we’re in a 12 trillion dollar debt after our government decided to pass the Stimulus Package and push for health reform costing us a severe blow to our nation’s illusory economy. But what did the government do in this scenario that made it resemble the same behavior we see coming from a spoiled college student? It played professional moocher. And what did it play professional moocher on? Itself and its own petty needs.

There is a reason why the Federal Government bailed out the same banks that carry the money it produced. And the last time I checked, the auto industry functions off labor unwho-is-this-guyions that are, yup, protected by the government (so they’re essentially government mandates jobs to keep the people quiet and the politicians rich). As for wall street, when you know that defecting on your yearly net worth will force the government to aid you in your bankruptcies, well it’s easy street till sitting back on a pile of cash accumulated by the government at the people’s tax paying expense. And just recently, we learned that the FDIC needed to be bailed out… This is the same government program designed to bail US out, the people, when our banks lose OUR money. Amtrak, a government-owned business, needed to be bailed out as well because, well, the quality sucks. The trains are constantly delayed or derailed.

So, in the midst of all this, the government still wants to fix healthcare and spend billions more on it’s awful programs. And they had the nerves to say the free market failed when all these industries, in some fashion, were directly related to and inherently reliant on the government for existence because of the laws that the same government passed forcing this unnecessary link. So, the next time someone tells you that the free market has failed, remind them that it was government agencies that failed and private businesses are just paying the price.

Will this college student ever understand? Have we really come down to the point where we’re comparing our government to silly binge drinking elitist college students?
